Congratulations Same Sex Couples…It is your time to shine.
“Same Sex Marriage” July 2011-New York State Law states that a same sex couple can lawfully be married and have been granted all rights to enter into a legally married union.
I personally feel that this is a major breakthrough in some of the restrictions placed within our society. Legalizing same sex marriage in the state of New York is a great stride toward balancing our individual as well as communal growth. We cannot fully grow collectively when there is a large portion of our people being limited to certain rights and forms of self expression. Having the ability to marry someone you are in love with, no matter what gender, is a wonderful feeling and it is even better when it is socially accepted. Although this law has been passed just over six months ago I have noticed that there are still some questions around the formalities of performing a same sex marriage. To answer some of these questions I have been asked often…I decided to start a short blog about it. These questions are valid and answered quite simply.
Question:Do you perform same sex marriages?
Answer: Yes and I do, honorably.
Question:How do you pronounce a same sex couple married?
Answer: While everyone of my ceremonies are unique to each couple I do usually (unless otherwise requested) pronounce all my couples the same way and a same sex couple has to be no different. After our final readings and blessings, I pronounce the couple simply and beautifully as "married" prior to signaling their first married kiss.
Question: How do you introduce a same sex couple for the first time to the audience?
Answer: This is usually decided by the couple as only you know how you will be entering into the marriage. In fact it is appropriate in all marriages to ask the couple how they would like to be introduced to their guests for the first time as a married couple.
I hope this helps, feel free to leave me questions or comments here. Thanks for reading.
